I am a grandmother! This is an experience diametrically opposed to that of motherhood. The new relationship between my grandson and me has nothing to do with his material well-being (that’s his parents’ concern), or his physical or mental development. I just know we will be friends, and it gives me hope. No one knows what he will become — a saint or a criminal, a leader or a bum — but he will always be my friend.

Being a grandparent requires that we transcend our emotions, to find what is timidly hidden in the heart of little children from birth, and is in tune with something within us.

Being a grandparent means facing emotional pitfalls anew. It’s wanting to stop tears that perhaps had to flow to open a path to some unknown joy. It’s forgetting how laughter can mask distress. It’s being impatient with the emptiness which is somehow a door to inner richness.
